Mirtul, Day 17 (1479 DR)

We have been awake for nearly two whole days, but I will write things down now before they are lost in the fog of my memory.

After waking up the morning after the assassin vine attack, we tracked out quarry south-east to a ravine. I discovered that it was well guarded, but I also found some unguarded caves that look to cut through the mountain. There were many such caves in my home country, and we often used them as shortcuts, and I feel at home in caves, so we took that route. It was already getting dark by the time we entered the cavern system, and we hobbled our horses on the grassed slopes outside. I hope they are uninjured when we return.

After many long hours winding our way through the dark passages, we came into an area honeycombed and open. It was a nest of cave fishers, unfortunately. Cave fishers are much like crabs with long, sticky tongues, that they use to ‘fish’ for travelers down below. Thankfully we kept out heads when several of out party were dragged into the darkness, and between my arrows and Caelynna’s fire, the crabs were quickly dispatched. Mordin even used a vial of alchemical fire to set one ablaze (it was a bit worrisome that he carries around explosive fire, since he’s not the most agile of us… still, he hit his target, so it was alright in the end).

Further along the cave system we came into an open cavern. I noticed what I thought were edible cave mushrooms, but missed the spiderwebs in the corners. It turned out that the mushroom was poisonous, and that the spider webs held massive cave spiders and ettercaps. We were surprised when they attacked us, but we made it through unscathed, if somewhat more bitten and roughed up than before.

Finally, after a few more hours, we made it through the cave and into the ravine on the other side. We exited the cave at about sunrise on the 18th, have now traveled for a full day.
